- Genetic disorder, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), St Jude Hospital, X-linked SCID
18-month-old, Ayaan Ahmed Isaacs was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) or Bubble Boy disease in April 2016. Currently, he’s receiving gene therapy in the US and more importantly, he is the first child in Africa to receive gene therapy for X-linked SCID using the modern technology developed by St Jude. SCID is a genetic disorder of the immune system and is the most severe type of primary immune deficiency diseases affecting about 1 in 58 000 births. The only known cure was a successful blood stem cell transplant from a matched sibling or an unrelated donor.
